I found a cyclamen plant at my parent’s house. Neglected. Just a bulb with dead leaves. I decided to rescue it.
Cyclamen plants are very popular as they flower most of the year. Their flowers tower above the thick, spotted leaves and they come in a variety of stunning colors.
As the warmer months arrive, these plants go into a dormant state, where the flowers and leaves die. This is when most of these lovely plants are thrown away.
With care, these plants will flower every year. For years. I’ve had a Cyclamen for 6 years that blooms for 10 months.
Here are the secrets to getting the most out of this beautiful plant.
Keep the soil moist, only water when the top of the soil starts to dry out.
When watering ensure the dirt is only watered. Cyclamen plants do not like their leaves and flowers being watered. This will kill them.
If the leaves and flowers droop, this is a sign the plant needs watering. Give the plant a good soaking, by submerging the pot into a bucket of water.
It’s essential to have excellent drainage, as these plants will die if they sit in a tray of water. When given as gifts, it is important to remove the plastic wrapping, as water will sit in the plastic and rot the roots.
Provide plenty of light
Cyclamen plants love bright light and will thrive in filtered sunshine. If they are placed in the direct sun, they will die.
If you want an abundance of flowers, place your plant next to a window. The more light, the more flowers.
Cyclamen plants like the cool temperature.
I have my plant indoors during the day and place it outside at night. I have recently placed a number of my cyclamen plants outside, undercover. They are thriving.
Dormant (Sleeping) Plant
During the warmer months, the leaves and flowers on the Cyclamen Plant will start to die. Remove all brown and yellow leaves. The only thing left is the bulb.
At this point, it is important not to water the plant. Place the Cyclamen in a dark, cool place over summer to allow the soil to dry out completely. This is the best time to re-pot. Place the bulb in a pot of choice then leave it.
When Autumn arrives, start watering the plant and give it a good feed. As soon as this happens, the Cyclamen will come out of its dormant stage and rapidly grown.
Re-potting Cyclamen Seeds
The Cyclamen plant produces seeds. These seeds have a sticky substance on the outside, which is very appealing to ants.
Ideally, the seeds will drop onto the dirt where they will be carried away by the ants. The sticky substance is ideal for ants and ideal for the plant. Once the rain has washed away the substance, it will start to germinate.
Cyclamen Plants are an ideal gift. Very few people know how to keep this plant blooming all year round. The 5 secrets to keeping this plant blooming are to only water when the soil is dry, keep away from heaters, keep the plant outside at night and place next to a window.
