Dirty John is a gripping true crime podcast, which will keep you on the edge of your seat. The title is misleading as John is a master conman who weaves his way into the hearts and lives of lonely women. And then takes over.

When John met Debra on an over 50’s dating site, it seemed to be a match made in heaven. He was a tall, suave anesthetist who wore his blue medical scrubs everywhere and had an impressive resume, which boasted working with Doctors without Borders. Debra owned a successful interior design company, who wore expensive clothes and lived the high life in lavish penthouses.

The fairytale romance appears to be very unrealistic and over the top to the listener, however, John’s attentive actions and romantic behaviors overtake Debra’s natural warning signals. She quickly becomes in danger and so does her family.

As the podcast progress in the 6 series, there is a twist, which was surprising, one I didn’t pick. This thriller will keep you gripped to the end.

A few thoughts

It is interesting the intense pressure society places on both women and men to find a partner. The perfect partner for life, the soul mate. I wonder how many couples are really soul mates and not just flatmates or enemies.

Debra had been married and divorced a number of times, she didn’t think it was possible for a woman in her late fifties to find love. I wonder if she felt society’s pressure to find a partner, and jumped at the first person who took notice or paid her attention. Perhaps ‘blind love’ plays a part in the acceptance of a partner’s faults and disguises the danger signs, all in aid of having so ‘Mr. Right…..for now’.
